If you find yourself wandering the scenic streets of Yufuin, Japan, make sure to pay a visit to 日本茶5toku, a charming cafe that captures the essence of traditional Japanese tea culture. Nestled in the heart of this picturesque town, 日本茶5toku stands out for its commitment to serving high-quality matcha in its purest forms, allowing patrons to truly savor the intricacies and subtleties of this beloved beverage.

The allure of 日本茶5toku lies not only in its menu but also in the inviting atmosphere, where the warm, rustic decor creates a cozy hideaway perfect for a refreshing break. Imagine sitting in a serene environment, the aroma of freshly prepared matcha wafting through the air, and the sound of gentle conversations around you as you enjoy your drink.

On the menu, you'll find a selection that highlights both the traditional and innovative uses of matcha. Their 抹茶ストレート (matcha straight) is a standout offering, crafted meticulously from premium matcha sourced from Hoshinomura in Fukuoka Prefecture, with a delightful balance of slight bitterness followed by a subtle sweetness—truly an authentic taste of Japan for just JP¥400. For those who prefer something sweeter, the 抹茶グリーンティー is a crowd-pleaser, offering a refreshing, well-balanced flavor profile that screams summer, also priced at JP¥400.

Customer reviews echo the cafe's dedication to quality. Yvonne Lau appreciates the no-sugar option, noting, "I liked that they had no sugar options so you can really taste the tea flavor." This sentiment resonates with many, as customers like Elijah “Japs” Espino have tasted the matcha in both its unsweetened glory and with added sweetness—experiencing its flavor profile to the fullest. Chris Koh remarked on the delightful balance of the matcha latte, making it a lovely spot to unwind and indulge in some people watching.

While some may debate the pricing, with Philip Woo commenting on the value of a quality cup at ¥600, it’s the unique offering of customization—where you can choose to sweeten your drink at a nearby station—that really elevates the experience. Whether you're new to matcha or a seasoned enthusiast, 日本茶5toku assures a satisfying stop on your culinary journey through Yufuin.

Take a moment to immerse yourself in this tranquil spot, where every sip is a testament to Japan's rich tea heritage and its enduring love for matcha. Remember, whether you're traveling solo or with friends, 日本茶5toku is not just a cafe; it's an experience waiting to unfold.

I liked they had no sugar options so you can really taste the tea flavor. However understand not everyone’s cup of tea.

They offer pure tea or tea lattes—standard matcha latte comes with sugar (no adjusting that), so I opted for the unsweetened version instead. There’s a little station nearby where you can add sugar if you need it, which is a nice touch. Was surprised they don’t sift the matcha powder—just toss it in a bottle, shake it up, and serve. Still, it turned out really tasty, with that distinct Yame matcha flavor shining through. Smooth, not bitter, and honestly refreshing. Almost no queue, quick service, and I’d recommend it if you’re after a solid matcha fix without the fuss.

Really nice matcha and the proportion with the milk is great. Good place for a short rest stop to people watch.

Good cup of hot latte matcha, not fantastic just very good. ¥600 is a little pricey for the standard. One time is ok

On our trip to the Kyushu Region we were on a mission to have at least 2-3 matcha lattes a day. For our daytrip to yufuin, 5 toku was our first matcha of the day. Matcha latte: I love how you have the option to add little packets of simple syrup OR sugar free syrup to your latte, because it is unsweetened. We tried both ways just so we can get the flavor profile of the matcha a lot better. From our understanding the matcha used was from Yame which checks out because it was minimal bitterness, high umami, high creaminess. I loved it. Hojicha: a perfect hojicha is one where you can really taste the toasted sesame taste. But at the same time doesn’t have that coffee taste to it. This was that. Definitely a high grade hojicha and one that will satisfy your cravings

Good taste and many choices of tea including sencha, matcha, hojicha and more. It also offers an instant matcha and tea leaves

The taste of matcha was too good! I can really feel the matcha. The smell is good. I prefer matcha float more than matcha latte. The latte one tases too much milk for me.
